What is Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment? We’re North Alabama’s largest center for the arts, approximately 100,000sq.ft., located in historic Lowe Mill. We have over 100 tenants, whose talents run the gambit of the fine arts. If you’re interested in non-commercialized art, music, entertainment and food, we’re worth checking out. For the last five years and counting, Lowe Mill A&E has supported a diverse creative community dedicated to the free expression of the arts in Huntsville. Our vision is to be a true arts destination and to grow Huntsville’s appreciation and interaction with the arts.
There are three floors of mostly artist studio spaces but there are other interesting people and groups too. Of special note are the metal casting foundry run by sculptor Everett Cox, archaeological group (TVAR), glass blower (Sue Knecht), 2 restaurants (Happy Tummy and The Palate that serve an eclectic menu with weekly variations), a lawn for outdoor concerts, and the Flying Monkey Arts Center (a 10 year old not-for-profit arts collective made up of performers, musicians, businesses and artists). The Flying Monkey is located on the 2nd floor and includes a theatre that supports a wide variety of shows and concerts, both in-house originals and touring acts. It is our first and oldest tenant.
Let’s not forget the entertainment part of our name. Visual arts may take up the most real estate, but our entertainment half has been going on longer (almost 6 years here with the Flying Monkey and for the last 3 years with our free Concerts on the Dock) and is just as diverse, the most diverse in the city. Where else can you see a gospel concert, swing dancing, traditional and non-traditional theatre, punk, rap, bluegrass, indie singer songwriters, film festivals, jazz, puppets, and burlesque shows within the course of the same month or even on the same day? Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment and the Flying Monkey Arts Center, that’s where. Come see what’s going on under the water tower!
