Everyone over the age of 21 needs financial and health-care powers of attorney, a living will (sometimes known as an advance directive), and a last will and testament. That’s how we make sure someone has authority to take care of our needs if we become temporarily incapacitated during our lifetime, how we make clear our end-of-life wishes, and how we control the disposition of our property once we’re out of the picture (so to speak). But artists need more: we need estate plans that acknowledge our work, accommodate our tools, and treat the unusual resources we have with care and clarity. In this one-hour workshop, Liza Q. Wirtz, attorney and artist, will give attendees an overview both of standard estate-planning documents and of the particular concerns artists should address as they consider and create those documents. This workshop will not provide legal advice to any specific person or regarding any specific situation. Instead, it will serve as a general introduction to estate planning for artists, with attendees invited to follow up individually with Q as and when they so desire.

About the instructor:

A former legal-aid attorney, professional musician, and bookseller, Liza Q. Wirtz (known as Q around the Mill and elsewhere) now runs a fiber-arts studio called the Foldout Cat, specializing in weaving, spinning, and fiber preparation. She also practice estate-planning law, crafting wills, living wills, powers of attorney, and related documents for a variety of clients, with a particular interest in serving artists and the LGBTQIA community. Q finds that combining right-brain and left-brain work in the same life makes for richer and more integrated experiences of and in that life.

This is a FREE event. However, to keep track of the number of attendees, please RSVP to Robert Daniel, robertdaniel@lowemill.net.
