This class is all about you, the wheel, the clay, and the liberating practice of making something just to destroy it. We’ll practice the basics of throwing on the potter’s wheel: centering, compressing floors, pulling walls, and shaping. After each piece is thrown, we’ll cut it in half and inspect our work for weak places in the wall, figure out why it collapsed or why it didn’t, and finally we’ll wedge that clay back into a ball to throw it again.
This class is great for potters of all experience levels, just know that you won’t have a physical pot to show for your work at the end of class (check out Basic Wheel-Throwing or the project-based classes if you want that shiny glazed pot at the end!). The fee for this class is for four consecutive class sessions, each 1.5 hours long, meeting once per week. Additional supplies include a pottery tool kit, which can be purchased in the studio on the first day of class for $20, or bought locally/ordered online before the start of class. We also ask that you bring an apron and a towel large enough to drape across your lap.
