Jim Seaquist: Painting, Studio 109
Jim Seaquist is an artist who works in many forms, but the central theme of his current work seems to always say, “Be BOLD”. With large geometric shapes stacked and sandwiched together, intense complimentary colors slammed against one another, and deliberate strokes of oil, thick as fudge, pressed firmly onto the canvas, there is no questioning that Jim works with a clear vision. Often working with the part-drawing-part-painting medium of oil stick, Seaquist creates highly graphic and playful images ranging from animals, to patterns, to recognizable symbols, figures, and many clever combinations of these trademark subjects. A canvas covered in an array of contradictory arrows seems to suggest looking beyond the artwork while simultaneously keeping our attention right where it started. A chair backed by a human face uses a form that welcomes us to sit but an expression that warns us from doing so.
