Sandra Lasater is a “space baby.” That is, she grew up here in Huntsville while her father, an engineer at Redstone Arsenal, worked on the Apollo missions that put man on the moon. After being raised in this technical-minded household, Sandra got married and had kids, never suspecting that her interest in art could become a serious pursuit. As a mother, Sandra learned to take care of others first. When her children grew up and moved out, she found herself caring for a dying uncle. When her uncle, and another close friend, both passed away, Sandra realized how short and precious life is. She decided it was time to accomplish the things she wanted in life, so she took a class in painting. In just a few short years, Sandra has nurtured a natural ability in the arts and created some amazing work. Sandra’s work focuses on animals and children. “I want to convey a sense of peace” she says, creating a serene escape from the chaos of daily life. Her work, executed in pastel, oil, or charcoal, contain a lot of personal meaning for the artist, but she also wants the viewer to connect with her work through their own experiences.

Sandra also creates commissioned portraits of pets and children. You can
find her creating in her North Wing Studio, 2027 at Lowe Mill ARTS &
Entertainment.

My life as an artist has been an total transformation to a new life – a metamorphosis that has been a true blessing. My journey began after I watched people that I love succomb to cancer and old age. I did not want to waste a moment of my life. After much prayer and searching, I decide to take an art class and found that I absolutely love immersing myself in a canvas of oils, pastels, acrylic and charcoal, creating a work of art from my heart.

My inspiration is the world in which we live. There are so many beautiful and unique people, animals, flowers and scenes, that I am never at a loss as to what to paint. As I paint, I want to see these images in a new way, with vibrant colors and textures. Using soft pastels is a way to bring these colors to life and oils bring the texture and richness to the canvas that I so love.
